Originally released for the PSP in 2006, LocoRoco is a quirky super colorful puzzle platformer (lite on the puzzle). LocoRoco was one of my favorite PSP games of all time and it’s fitting that it would be the first (of hopefully many) PSP titles to get a remaster treatment for the PS4.

We have asked Sony about it and will update the article if the company has anything else to add.The PSP is back! Actually that’s not entirely true… The fact is that the first PSP remaster for the PS4 is here.

Our only problem with it at the time was the fact that it ran at 30FPS. In fact, no one noticed during the release, and Sony even released a demo of Parappa so that everyone could test the quality of the remastering before paying. Despite its PSP origins, the results hold up well. Parappa, LocoRoco and Patapon cost € 14.99 each, or € 29.99 for a bundle with all three.

What’s surprising is that Sony is once again selling PSP code with revamped textures on its next-gen console. Similarly, this emulator has been able to run on PS4 consoles committed to playing other PS2 titles. There is already a PS2 emulator that offers better performance and a 4x resolution increase, which has allowed Sony to launch its PS2 Classics. Only the 30FPS of the remastering attracted attention when it came out.įor one thing, the existence of an emulator for PSP on PlayStation 4 is not surprising.

It may be emulation, but the new textures really make a difference. The list of games that this emulator can run seems to be very limited. The resulting files can only be run on compromised Playstation 4 consoles. Since the case of Parappa has been revealed, ‘injection’ tools have appeared that allow changing the Parappa UMD for another chosen by the user. The most important implication is that it is possible that other PSP games released on PS4, such as LocoRoco or Patapon, could be using this same technique, as injecting the original PSP code of these games into the emulator seems to work fine. Still, the compatibility seems to be very limited at the moment.

The configuration file suggests that Parappa is running under a multipurpose emulator with certain options such as choosing between multi-sampling or super-sampling anti-aliasing, plus the option to press the 元 button to switch between the original textures and their remastered counterparts.įurther investigation by hackers has allowed a small number of PSP games to run on a PS4, apparently confirming that it would be a general emulator rather than code intended solely for Parappa. Basically, within the PlayStation 4 game there is a configuration file that points to a disk image of a PSP UMD which, in the case of Parappa the Rapper, apparently has the same MD5 hash as the original PSP game, confirming which is original unmodified code. The evidence is convincing, with several hackers showing some other PSP games running on a PlayStation 4 using that same emulator. The aspect of the remastering would come from the incorporation of a pack of high resolution textures that replaces those of the PSP with ones more suitable for the current generation of consoles. Would you believe us if we told you that the remastered Parappa the Rapper for PlayStation 4 is actually the PSP version running under an emulator? This is the claim that a group of PlayStation 4 hackers have made after examining the code of the game, as revealed by ‘KiiWii’ on the GBATemp forum (many thanks to Ars Technica for their summary of the story to date). It seems that the PS4 Parappa Remastered is the PSP game running under an emulator
